I got in 2 fantastic runs: 50 minutes early in the morning. The second run I felt heavy footed. I think it may be psychological. I thought I only had 40minutes to run, and this seemed like a lot longer than my usual jog.
Also mountain biked 1 1/2 hours. Life is beautiful.
A little tired.

WHile on holidays...
The flight to Saskatchewan couldn't have had better timing- while I would have loved to have caught the Ani Difranco/ Feist Concerts at Folkfest the week before, it was good to arrive when I did.
First and foremost I slept (10-15 hrs a day!). My other 2 priorities included aligning my diet to promote recovery, and trying to set my sleeping clock so that I'd wake up for work-outs while teaching.
GREAT BOOKS:
THRIVE by Brendan Brazier for the vegan Athlete.
GOING LONG: by Joel Friel
Got in a few good swims at the leisure centre and university (1200m. with drill)
Ran 4 times a week. I tried a speed workout, but it took ages (4 days!) for my quads to recover.
Best run ever was with FrontRunners Regina, I got in 27.5 km in 2.5 hours = 5.45 km . We did a bit of walking too- because of the group I was running with. 30 and ~1s. When I to my 30km this weekend I plan to go straight through.
At this pace I would get a sub 4 hour marathon... eeeee!!!! that would be sooo great! I got a lot of confidence in this run, because I felt good. I took only one gel, and drank a bit of water. IT was brilliant. I met two great people- one of who played football and handball with my ol' basketball coach: Roweena, and then Nevon who has lost 50 pounds in the last 3 months training for his half. He ran the full 27 km with me, for which I'm very grateful!
Got in a hike as well... quite the steepness, up to Hermit's pass out by Rogers pass. So beautiful. The trail end is nestled in glacial cirques and mountain peeks.
Yahoo... might be able to do the royal vic' marathon after all!

Bike: Nanaimo Cycling Club @ Cedar
50km avg’ing 33.5km/hour
Wow- it was a fast ride. There were lots of newbies making it extra surgee and inconsistent in speed. I got burnt in the last 5 km when I almost nicked the wheel of the pack in front. With a bit of caution and some hesitation I lost the group. In a way, it made for a more honourable end–I had no one to draft from.
Another gal’ showed up tonight from Russ Haye’s in Victoria. (marian.. gotta remember her name) She’s a winter cyclist and is up for helping me get my miles in.
Great weather- the sun was almost down before we finished.…
Filled up on some hemp protein, blueberries and peaches.
Change in Plans… : I’ve hit another knot in my plans for this year. I’m going to have to delay my marathon run until the Seattle marathon in November. After chatting with friends and trainers, it seems like the best bet in order to build up my mileage and have a good race. This way I might feel more confident and strong by the time race day comes instead of hope my magic formula might work for the royal vic.
I was pretty bugged about the change… feeling like there’s something I could have done… or perhaps I was even a bit discouraged with this whole try-athlete thing. But, The more I think about it, the more I like the idea- I think it will be raining (which is ideal), I’ve never been to Seattle (but I think I love the city already), and I can get one more ½ marathon under my belt prior to the next step (way more fun to get in a long run with so many dedicated athletes).

HIKE Della Falls and Love Lake:
Wow, sooo beautiful and so fantastic to be in the mountains again- My first time in Strathcona Park. The views were spectacular and the hike was a bit tougher than I anticipated. With full packs:
As always, I wish I had more time on these hikes to just sit in the mountains… so incredible!
RUN 20km 1:57
Ran out around the Tzouhalem Rd down to Genoa Bay and back. from Trunk Road- really beautiful rolling road. I’m glad I got in my long run for the week. I think with the hiking as well today I made close enough to my 25km goal. Giddeeup…

Morning Run yahoo!: 40min. Beach Estates out to the South Shawnigan Lk. Rd turn off. Its raining–and I love it. I can totally tune out and just run forever, the calming sound lets me not think at alll about what i’m doing. My hips and gluts feel fragile right now- on the hills I focussed on tucking and extending my pelvis… depending on ascent or descent. I really want to make it to the marathon.…
Lunges up Copeman’s Stairs, and then ankle balance work accross the walkway.
Mega Stretching time (20 minutes), with 35 push-ups. I’ll do my core before yoga.
Got some great advice from Tara yesterday on the hike.… I’d like to ask her to coach me for ironman.
PHYSIO Glutes are very tight and setting my pelvis off balance. Chris gave me a few excercises to strengthen my bum: clam shell raises, shoulder bridges with leg raises. Also stretches to lossen it up.

Sunday, August 6:
WOW! It rocked! Lots to reflect on and write… Amazing race-
Note: Robyn Benwell Raced the Duathlon and won 2nd place for her age category.
Swim: 1600 metres: 33:53 minutes. (176th/269 place) (my head hangs in disappointment)
The latté for the car ride and then a gel 10 minutes prior to the swim wound me up into a bit of a frantic frenzy. I was shakety shake waiting to start. In the first 600metres I was really quite anxious. I couldn’t really breath. Everything I tried seemed useless to help me feel like I could finish the swim: back stroke, doggey paddle, yoga self-talk (as i roll my eyes and giggle at this memory). My normal 3 stroke-breath pattern was suffocating, and the 2 stroke-breath felt too quick panic-ee.
Boy, was it good to hit the first buoy (oh dear).… somehow everything fell into place and the remaining kilometre I found the stroke I was used to from training. It finished swift and strong–but I felt like I messed up pretty bad. I could have easily shaved 4 or 5 minutes off my time with better pre-race prep’. In fact- I would have been right up there with Laura had I swam better. this sport is crazy!
BIKE:40 km with two transitions 1:20:45 (100th/269)
(a little redemption here after a tough swim! it felt faster than the clocked time: i wish they timed the transition splits)
I averaged 30km/hour in the first 30km and then pumped it up with two crazy tall fellows. Tony, from Nova Scotia, told me that we rode in at 34km/hour. YEAH! That was awesome. I passed a lot of people.
Laura- a sinewy strong woman, sporting an iron man tatoo and riding a very nice bicycle- seemed to play tag with me throughout the ride. But the last 10km rocked and I didn’t see her until the run. She’s an inspiration and became my pace setter for the run when she caught up to me.
I would say that my actual riding time was 1:14.
What didn’t rock was my transition from swim to bike. It took me a silly amount of time. I got all twisted in my sport top–it would have made a great blooper on video. I would like to get elastic laces for tying my runners. Even putting on my bike shorts took a long time. Perhaps buying a tri-suit just to have it there and ready under my wet suit would save me from that extra work and tension. I’d like a better system for my gels too- they were clumsy in the back of my sport top. Wanda has a great system of taping them to her bike post.
RUN: 10km 50:43min (109th/269racers).
This run rocked. I prefer the longer distance because it gives me more time to wiggle out of my crampy calves from bike-riding. Whereas my first tri’ remained a painful 5 km, I found my body could ease into its normal pace in the 10km, so I really worked-it the last 6 km. Again–its Laura and this other gal (Kelley) who got me going. I also passed Tony from Nova Scotia on the run. He was all crampy cramp. I kept calling him Saskatchewan because I mistook him for another guy. I’m loving the tri’ atmosphere–its really social and supportive.
Fuel: E-Load Energy Drink. I liked this way better than gatorade- I find the Gat’s is just too sweet. I ate 3 gels. One prior to the race, one 10 minutes into my ride, and another at km 6 on the run. I also drank gatorade at every aid station on the run: 5 stations. Jon and I ate oatmeal at 4:30 in the morning, and had a latte at 5:30 for the road. He argues that the coffee permits greater pain endurance (?). I just like a good coffee at that hour. I drank a litre of e-load while prepping for the race, and lots of water with the gels. It was hot, and I was so dehydrated at the end of the race. It felt like my head was being wrung out. good times.
Best female time was 2:13- that gives me something to aspire too. I’m just so glad that I can hold my own in this sport. There’s no struggle really- besides the pain and grueling work of going the distance (no, that’s not a contradiction). I felt I did the right things (besides the gel at the start of the race) to prepare me for this race. YAHOO!
I also want to remember Wanda’s name- a remarkable women with 2 teenaged daughters. One of whom is friends with Anjani and Arielle (anamika?) from Powell River. If I write it down i’ll remember to tell the girls.
Self Transcendence Triathlon: Elk Lake

Thursday, Aug. 4th Swim Thetis Lake–Both Islands. It was a bit choppy. ~1500 metres: 29min 30.
Met Jerry- he’s running the Ironman this August. Gave me some breathing pointers for the swim… see what happens on Sunday.
Yoga: At beautiful Glenora. I can really feel the days getting shorter. There was a lot of focus on hips- which rocked. I’m feeling limber for Sunday’s race. (The Kingstones are there- and i can’t help but think how awesome that is for a fam’ activity. I’m trying to picture my family trying to take a course like that all together… nevermind the stiffness of all my 4 older siblings… the stubborn awkwardness and Irish humour would “take the piss” out of the course! The image gives me a good giggle.)
Sunset Bike: It is just too beautiful out here- bahh! Awesome hard and strong 30 minute ride out to the edge of Hutchison, Cameron Taggart and Lover’s Lane. Saw Al training as well- what a strong dude. .
Tomorrow is rest day! Book time.

Tuesday, Aug. 1st (Summer Hump Day… bahhhh)
YoGA: At Beautiful Glenora. I was quite tired today. hmmm.… need to rest up from an exciting weekend.
BIKE with Nanaimo Cycling Club up in Cedar
I dropped off after the 2nd lap to get in a run- 20minutes out of Cedar elementary and back. I tried my ol’ sprint the sunny patches technique, but i just have no concept of how fast i’m running. My legs definitely felt stronger than the cramps i had to haul at the Cow’ Challenge, but its still so unclear if I’m running my normal pace or too hard. It should be interesting to see how far into the trail I get before I vomit from exertion.… Good times- can’t wait till Sunday.
I got some new fancy schmance wine glasses at Fancy Cdn. tire.… the wine is calling, as is bed, but before i log out:
a memoriam for a respectable guy (copied from globe and mail):
Dugald Christie, 65
Vancouver — A lawyer considered “the conscience of the legal profession” for his efforts to ensure equal access to legal help is being mourned by his peers.
Dugald Christie died after he was hit by a van in Ontario during a cross-Canada cycling tour to bring attention to the cause he was planning to present to Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
His efforts led to the opening of 60 clinics in British Columbia — and several in other western provinces — that offer free legal advice to people who couldn’t otherwise afford a lawyer.
B.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice Donald Brenner said Tuesday he met Mr. Christie several years ago and was impressed by the man’s passion for his cause.
“He always had a twinkle in his eye,” Judge Brenner said.
“He had a mission and he was determined to get to where he wanted to get to and he wasn’t good at taking No for an answer and he wasn’t good at, I guess, letting obstacles get in his way.”

- 35 km. It rocked! The group Is soo nice, and we avg’d a pace of 31-32km/hour. I drove up with an old boy from the school- class of ‘83: jon. What are the chances? He’s a pretty funny guy, and is riding one of the custom built Berg’ bikes. Oh, had i known that just down the road is a great guy building great bikes. John had some funny stories from Copeman’s. So fun to cruise in a pack.

- —- I have trouble when people say that it is dangerous for people to ride their bicycles on the highway. It needs to be heralded that cyclists decide to share the road with drivers. as it is often chanted in critical mass “cyclists are traffic.” how hard is it–really–to slow down and share the road?

Monday, July 31st.
BIKE: From Café Fantastico on Quadra and King to Thetis Lake (~10km?). Met some people from SMUS who were wearing cycling jerseys from the school. One of the guys was Mexican–making for a much needed conversation en español.
Wow what a hill. there is just one section, right at the beginning of the ascent where i need to gear right down to my grandpa gear. but the rest of the way i was clicked in at the second cog, and i rolled. I really enjoyed the ride.
FOOD: Ate a Elev8me bar. I’m shopping around for a bar I like… with a bit of ambivalence, because it feels like an artificial way to stay strong and healthy.. and a bar that’s packed with so much seems so astronaut food-like, there’s no real enjoyment. I liked this bar b/c of the high concentration of protein (18g) and the un-sulfered dates and raisins (mmm)
At home I ate a handful of goji berries. I decided to copy this in so that I can refer to it more easily. Robyn Meagher recommended them: a very rich source of vitamin C,a superb source of vitamin A, more beta carotene than carrots. Vitamins B1, B2, B6, and E and are an antioxidant. A rich source of both selenium and germanium (? whatever that is). 18 amino acids (higher than bee pollen) and 21 trace minerals, linoleic acid and other beneficial food co-factors.
Nutritional Facts: ¼ cup serving (approx. 1 oz), calories 90, fat 0g, fiber 4g, protein 4g, carbs 24g, sugars 12g
Time for some good food and relaxation.
YOGA: at St. Andrew’s with Lise- so good!
BIKE: From Café Fantastico on Quadra and King to Thetis Lake (~10km?). Met some people from SMUS who were wearing cycling jerseys from the school. One of the guys was Mexican–making for a much needed conversation en español.
-
- SWIM: ~1200 metres in 24 minutes. No wetsuit.
- - did some resistance excercises for my ankle (3 × 15 sets in/ and then again out)
Wow what a hill. there is just one section, right at the beginning of the ascent where i need to gear right down to my grandpa gear. but the rest of the way i was clicked in at the second cog, and i rolled.

Sunday:
No Run! BAHH injury.… I made it as far as the Shaw’s, and decided the creakiness in my foot is too unpredictable. I soo just want to go for the run, but then i know that it will probably mean more damage to my foot. grumble.
I’m a bit apprehensive about my potential for the marathon in October.… this is meant to be my month for stupid long runs so that i can establish a more ridiculous sense of endurance. I guess I’ll just have to postpone this for a little later. I’ll soon be in saskatchewan. The unrelenting flatness will provide a more conducive surface for my foot that’s screaming at me anytime I decide to roll around a trail, or creep up our hills.
and what a joy to stop into Carol and Richard! So grounding, in spite of Richard calling me a wus’ for not running. —- there is more to life than my obsessive training. today i might just have to rip out the paints and pastels.
c’est tout.
BIKE: to a BBQ in Victoria: ~43 km. Awesome ride.
I tried to ride with music this time, and my clumsy ol’ cd player (which is really actually quite new) was so awkward with a skipping cd. It then ran out juice in the batteries within the first 20 minutes of my ride. Makes me want to give into buying a mini MP3 player… finally.
Wow… biking out of the South Shawnigan Rd. is tough… but its getting easier.

Bike Emo’
Plan: Swim and Bike the Courses at Elk Lake for next week’s tri’.
SWIM: There were crazy white caps and waves that would drown out my stroke and breathing.
I wanted to try it anyways, in case next week’s conditions are just as choppy, but Jon’s cycling buddies arrived earlier than planned, so we got going sooner on the bikes.
BIKE: 1km. DAMAGE: Ultegra Derailer ripped off mid ride: scraping my carbon stay, destroying my chain, mangling a small section of two of my spokes in my wheel. SOUND: Worse than scraping your nails on the chalk board. Before I even saw the damage, I knew by the sound that it was a terrible war zone in my rear wheel. I’ll never forget this sound. Shane could relive it so well with me at the bike shop- oh… shudder. COST: CRAZY DOLLARS- WAY TOO MUCH! ME: I was so emotional. I hate to be so shallow to be so affected by a thing–regardless of how much money it cost; here I go philosophizing.… But there’s more to the bike. i LOVE bikes. I’ve done so much with my bicycles: guided, commuted (snow or shine), courriered, learned bike maintenance, bike activism, travelled 1000’s of miles, pretended I was in Cirque de Soleil, mountain biked, adventure raced, triathlon raced… bicycles = possibility. Buying the road bike is a mega-privilege. When I returned home with it I was enamoured by my new fancy machine with some of the top-of-the-line components. It wasn’t so much the money, but the quality. This investment would not be taken for granted. oh joy.
and then ke-thunk. drrrrrrrrrrrrrr. i cried. its embarassing how attached i’ve gotten to my bike. I can’t believe that the dreailer could just fall off. hmph. it was a long afternoon.
But good all the same! The boys at Riders’ were so good to me–fixed everything up right away, and made my bike all shiny again. I’m a bit frustrated with the whole warantee situation. There is no reason for the derailer to have broken by me… after a short 2 months- there’s no reason for the bike to be falling apart like this. Its a tricky situation knowing how much to ask for. I expected the 200$ part to be warante-ed. There is no way I made or could have prevented the break. In fact the bike shop can’t even reasonably tell me how to avoid this same situation. BAH! They gave me a discount on the part- but I’m still bugged–and wish I was more savvy, or had a bit more wisdom to call on to know whether or not the shop is giving me he run around. i was just too impatient to wait for a second opinion. I’d rather not ask too much.…
BIKE #2
Dipped in the water after to try and flush out my legs. I’ve also gotten into the whole protein/ carbohydrate recovery trend. I’ve been making sure to eat 20g of protein with 30 g. of carb’s right after my work out. The idea is that this will help my muscles recover faster. (?). all about try-athlete-ing.
good night.

BIKE #2
- Distance: 40km
- Time: 1hr 20
- Weather: Windy- lots of headwind on the return… cool, but I was too hot with a long sleeve. Road was great, except for Old West Saanich Rd. I think I can fly on this ride.
- Road: Windy and hilly- but not too bad. I felt like it would be so much longer. i was pleasantly surprised when I reached the turn-around because I didn’t have that “wish it were over already” feeling. This is very exciting.

Friday
Physio: - went really well- noticed a bit of achyness. Chris Id’d the bone on the right side of my foot that levers the muscled down the right side of my leg under my foot to the knuckle of my big toe. (i really know my anatomy… oh shame)
We worked on some balance work and resistance strength excercises. He gave me the go-ahead for running more volume, but to stop if it hurts and not to try and make a personal best in this coming 10 km. I planned to run today. I asked about my marathon training… I should be running ~25 km on Sunday. He said to run for an hour, and to then transition to low impact excercise like 1 hour on the eliptical (oh how boring!). I’ll take him up on it though… this is easier to say since I’m so sore now from my run! BAHH!
RUN: Training PB 10km around Elk Lake 47 min.
- I ran hard… went really well. I really don’t like the hot sunny parts, so my game was sprint any section with sun. Went well. I also toned down my hill work by keeping my steps short. It was a very strong run for training. I so enjoyed catching up to the dude on his fartlek. I caught up to him, and just before I passed him, he needed to tell me “Don’t worry- I’ll catch up to you again, any moment now..” and literally, before I even physically bypassed him, he flew by me. Oh pride some people have. I enjoyed running behind him, it was like the tortoise and the hare… only I don’t like calling myself the tortoise.… anyways… great run.
INJURY: Immediately after the run, my foot was in pain. I was very aware. I ran into a few iron man dudes. The guy was wearing a Riders’Cycles jersey (where I bought my bike) and had his little tatoo logoéd on his body. (I’m a bit undecided about the merits of the Ïronman” tattoo… anyhow) His name was Scott- and we had a great chat about transitions and training and arrow bars for my bike. (must get!)
SWIM 15 min. It was very short… because of chatty chat Scott, who kept babbling in the parking lot. I’m so glad I popped into elk lake. The weeds aren’t bad at all. The waves, on the other hand, are very challenging. Much more wind and opennness at this lake. I found it way more chaotic. I think I’m gonna lose myself laughing at the tri’ next weekend because of all the variables invovled in a pack-swim on choppy water.

RUN! Back in the groove ~ Ran today.
I woke up with the sun to a a 20 min. run, and felt great. My physio recommended that I walk-run… but the run felt so painless and light that I felt no need to run. It was so beautiful at this time of day- I look forward to planning my schedule around this.

Monday, July 24th.
Wow- what a hot spell… i really need to keep up with drinking water, because i got all crampy cramp in my calf muscles on my ride today. And for some odd reason, i decided to eat a tuna sandwich before going- I never eat tuna anymore! It was terrible- I was just burping and slowing down a bit… bah- silly impulse. That’s what happens when i’m not prepared with a good snack and I need to buy something at a gas station… oh dear.
Same ol’ bike ride with Riders’ Cycles’ group. It rocked–I don’t even think of gears anymore. ~40 km. We rode along the sea wall again up to UVIC (very beautiful).
I pretty much stuck with the guys on this ride- and the dude who always makes the patronizing comments about the “gal trying to push to the front” is starting to get used to me… man is he ever annoying- but then again- he’s the nemesis that makes me push it that much harder.
I had a couple of my in-between rides where i had to give 100% with no one to draft off of… but that’s good prep for the tri’. I should get the computer for my bike.
I’m thinking of getting the drop bars too: the sooner the better.

i’m so glad that i’m injured this weekend. finally feeling the best parts of summer… not just about the working out.
SWIM: Total: 2000metres at Thetis Lake
Got in for a super good swim today- I swam about 1650metres in 32:13. I want my 1.5 km swim in the tri’ to be 28 min. I’ll have to swim this a few times this week to bring the time right down. This way, when I get back into the chaos I’ll be closer to reaching my goal. I also got in some drill. 2 × 3 min catch-up stroke, 2 × 3min kick. Then a final 7 minute return; freestyle.
Yesterday’s little work out actually served me well. I was flying in the lake… the wetsuit really makes it easier to swim. Perhaps in one of my laps this week I’ll do it without the wet suit. That will make the following lap super strong.
Practiced my transition from wetsuit… need to oil up my ankles really good. That’s where I lose the most time.
c’est tous! Time for a glass of wine

Saturday..
ow- my ankle’s really soar. I went for about a 5 k walk… pain.
I swam a bit too- and hoped that I would have done more–except the quarry is actually a bit creepy to swim– there is a network of ropes around the perimeter of the lake, and its haunting. This makes it dificult to just go and swim. We did swim without wetsuits–making it a tougher workout…
i still wish i acoomplished more. i guess this is a bit of a slump… i want to make the most of my time.… and its so much more fun to be writing in my bloog with positive reflections… ones in which I’m feeling stronger and accomplished. Let this feeling shape my week ahead!

Friday July 21st
wow… i’m in the ebb of my training here. This is where submitting to the blog gets difficult. a combination of my pride and frustration makes it hard for me to write that i’m on a bit of a break here.… the physio recommends another 6 days break. i’ll do my excercises and wait for Tuesday’s app’t.
—- funny, at this same time i heard about a woman who just completed her first ½ iron man, and was on her way to complete a full… but she was crashed into by a car on the #1 highway heading to Thetis Lake. I’m really affected by this extremely tragic situation. It shows just how much vested interest i have in this new athletic culture–i feel like one of my good friends has had her life changed forever, yet i don’t even know her.
For me, there is so much more to training for triathlon and long distance running- its the physical and psychological toughness that grates at you but also uplifts you to realize that you are more than mere tissue–that you can transcend so many limitations… but its hard- the focus, persistence, and the balance of pushing beyond the burn burn burn of your body to paying attention and letting it rehabilitate as well.
Yesterday Thetis was closed- so I drove up to Mount Work and did 30 min of run walk (30sec/ 2 min intervals… felt so good to run- but i think i’ll wait now until the physio gives me the go ahead to run- I want the Tri at Elk Lake to be ridiculously awesome.
that’s it.
if anyone happened to read this- be respectful of all cyclists… or simply enough- ditch the keys and ride your bike!

THursday
- Jon reminds me to look at the next year as just a bunch of pebbles in the road to cross before you get to the top of the mountain (ironman 2007?.)
well yesterday it felt more like a boulder than a pebble.…
First, yesterady was gorgeous! I picked up my bike at UVIC and was racing up the Wst Saanich Rd. to make the Brentwood Ferry–I was super strong–flying- it was the set-up for a perfect session prior to the triathlon on Aug. 6th. But then, “powishhh” flat tire.
This stunted everything in my evening, I was totall disoriented: I had no need to go for my planned run to train my muscles for the transition, I lost any interest in finishing my core work, and i was totally disengaged with my pending essay in English… Crazy how I was performing well, but the let down in my equipment affected my productivity.
good experience to see what can happen when all is swell and then not swell- evidently I’m needing some work on perseverence and persistence.
My ankle’s being a real pain too- off to the physio on Friday.

Wednesday, July 18th
BIKE:
49 km to UVIC– Strong Ride- I remained in the second cog the whole way up the South Shawnigan Lake Rd. It was super tough, but then passed so much quicker. I let myself zone out by the time I reached Goldstream to just let my legs spin out the flat part- But I was too zoned out to notice the construction sign, and I could have had a really ugly accident. I’m very lucky.
- food: I was totally craving a sweet treat when I arrived at UVIC, but I stuck with water, Goji berries and pumpkin seeds- I think this was so much more satisfying in the end (wow- tautology)
SWIM
35 min at Shawnigan Lake (some kick and catch up drill- this always improves my swim!)

Tuesday, July 18th.
Missed a major day of the Tour De France today- darn- all that inspiration at 5:30am.… Now that I’ve got a better idea of what days are good, I’m looking forward to watching the Saturday time trials and final day to determine the winner of the Yellow Jersey. I got a cute invitation from Riders’Cycles to watch it with them. It will be fun to get some pointers from all the hard cores.
MORNING: YOGA at beautiful glenora. - I’ve got a bit of a sprayn in my right ankle again… the tension is along the side of my tibia… I’ve iced it a ton, but didn’t feel confident with the balance poses on my right foot. Something to keep my eye on- I may do physio.
EVENING:- Tuesday Night Bike Ride at Cedar. 40km… easy going group I rode with, let me spin my legs a whole bunch and work out all the soreness and lactic acid build up.
- My ankle was totally fine on the ride- the stiffness of the shoes kept it from wiggling around.
- What a nice group- it cost me 40$ to register with insurance. I found the B group a bit too easy- I was often not peddling at all when I wasn’t leading. When I switched into the toughest gear, it made it a bit more challenging. Ha! The final sprint was funny, I was totally dropped off. I’d like to figure out how to make a burst on my bike… hmmm.
- Stephanie is great, and Peter and Don Gilmore were there. I think I’ll enjoy this group.
C’est tout! time to ice and get to bed!

Wow- I’m so soar!!! I’m hobbling at the best of times! I guess I really worked hard at the race yesterday.
2 reflections:
- I can’t believe there is such a discrepancy between a road ½ marathon and a trail marathon. Add some elevation and wonky terrain, and suddenly my time gets to be a lot longer and my body is soar!
- I’m also surprised how soar I am. When I run with Richard, I don’t feel this same stiffness, yet we will run a solid 16 km in trails… Mind you, we do stop at the river for a drink… Amazing what happens when you just race.

Saturday:
My hamstrings remain very tight and soar since yoga on Thursday.
I spent an hour at Oak Bay Rec’Centre doing hot-cold therapy, and doing everything I can to not have to walk in preparation for tomorrow.
I bought my first water belt. Yahoo.

Thursday July 13
YOGA: 1 hour of Ashtanga
My right hip seems a bit soar… in certain positions, even if I’m resting it will sometimes ‘palpate.’ So I went to yoga to open it up a bit, and stretch.
RUN: 40min This was a great run… my legs have a different cadance from all the biking. Beautiful Beach Drive in Victoria and a soft rain.

Wednesday July 12th
Morning:
1.50 minutes: 49 km bike to UVIC… Malahat went way better… it was raining pretty intensely, and my gloves felt gewwy. Time for a new pair, and it would be better for warmth sake to wear full fingered gloves. I get a bit lazy on the Goose Trail… I finished the first 20 km in 45 minutes! woo.
RUN: I did a 20 minute loop through the trails at UVIC to get my muscles more accustomed to the seemingly violent transition to running from bike.
EVENING:
Biked back via Brentwood Ferry = 39km The West Saanich Rd. is sooo beautiful, and I biked it very hard. I lost total steam by the end of ferry ride, so I bought some haagen daaz at Thrifty’s. It was soooo delicious, but didn’t help at all. Jon is right about glocose and fructose. I couldn’t digest the fat and sugars fast enough and my last 10 km were grueling. Ah well- no regrets.
time to rest.
TOTAL: 88 km.

Tuesday July 11,
Evening
Swim at Thetis Lake:
~ 750 m. swim
600 m drill: 5 min kick, 5 min catch-up stroke, 5 min kick
200 m speed swim
Morning: Yoga: at beautiful Glenora.
- I’m feeling a bit stiff from my hard ride yesterday- that’s telling of how much I could have put in at the triathlon, and instead committed to yesterday’s training. My hips are a bit tight- not really opening up, but i felt very steady and strong. - Had a banana, apple and juice with hemp protein. I’m liking the lighter breakfasts- easier to be active this way.

Swim at Thetis Lake:
~ 750 m. swim
- this was good, I felt like I could go forever- there’s one point whereI totally veered off course. Need to find an efficient way to look ahead.
600 m drill: 5 min kick, 5 min catch-up stroke, 5 min kick
- this was good- my kick needs strengthening.
200 m speed swim
- the drill really increased the strength of my swim- I felt like I could go foreever. There is this block in me that makes me stop going hard before I get tired… as if I’m afraid of hitting that wall of “can’t go no more.” I’d like to start challenging this block.

Monday July 10, Great Run Day!
MORNING: ? Should have I gone more- I decided that I should taper for the run on Sunday, but I wonder if I should have continued to build or at least maintain the kms… It was a tough call because of yesterday’s race.
I continue to get a weak stomach on hills that I run hard… something I would like to get to the bottom of! (ha!)
I decided on only an hour run-
Very Strong. 12 km 61 minutes! yahoo ondole.
EVENING:
Road Ride with Group in Victoria
40 km, including observatory hill.
- I almost made it up the whole way in the second cog, but I breaked on the granny gear for about 30 metres.
- Kicked up my average speed into the 30 km/ hour, which was satisfying.
- Good lesson, one dude stopped in the middle of the hill, and I felt my legs crash with lactic acid. Having to stop and start again at high intensity is probably good.. I could finally tell myself after cursing the guy who cut off the riding lane.

FIRST TRIATHLON–YÄHOOOOO!
Cowichan Challenge at Fuller Park: 2nd place in my category
- slept in
until 7:00 am… must be still trying to catch up from the year. decided to forfeit my planned breakfast except for a banana and a dried fig, with lots of water. Right before the race I had a little bit of a non-caffeine gel with more water… this worked well I felt good throughout the race.
SWIM 500m: 14.23
- Good for a first tri’ (pun intended)
I found the swim chaotic… difficult to find a place where I fit in the bunch… I kept running myself into the kick of a slower swimmer and was swam over by other athletes. I also took a boot to the face at the final buoy, which was a bit disoreinting too.
About 40 metres into the race I poked my head out and laughed. I also veered way off course for about 30 or 40 strokes after the final buoy. But, I’m pleased with my overall stroke and endurance.. I managed my own breathing quite well, and could have shaved significant time off had I swam uninterrupted.
TRANSITION: was a bit looney… I need to practice sliding out of the wet suit and how to efficiently put on my shorts. I also forgot to open up my shoe velcrow, helmet straps and glove velcrow (seconds seconds seconds… i’ve been bit by the tri bug)
BIKE 17km: 35:38 minutes (with transition ~4min)
I could have made this a lot faster… I felt so strong, and I kept waiting for some deathly hill to have to climb.. so I thought I should try and save my energy. The hills I did climb were excellent.
My speed 28.6 km/ hour. I could have totally booked it more in the bike. I think having a computer would help me push it more because I know what I’m capable of.
I drank almost a 1 litre of ½ water ½ gatorade. Worked well.
I jumped over the speed bumps, that was fun!
RUN 5km: 27.02
Woah… what a transition.. very fast and efficient, I felt good
I was a bit wobbly, but felt fine because I expected this…
But I didn’t expect so much burning in my calves. I wanted to push it harder, but then my calves were on fire. I need to practice this transition more. As soon as I turned to the end I felt very strong and ran very hard. Very good end.
I got 2nd place in my age category and stand at the edge of the Top Third of all racers, this leaves me pleased and very eager to train harder and compete more. I could easily improve my times! yahoo.

Friday July 7th
Lots of running around in my car, and not a lot of action
- got fitted for my bike at Riders’ Cycle - Swam ~1 km at Thetis Lake (first time in wetsuit!)
I like the wet suit, way more floatation, and Thetis is wonderful. plan to do that one on the way home sometimes.

Thursday July 6th
Bike ~40 km back to Shawnigan.
~1.45
- Much easier up the Malahat- stayed in my second cog only for 2/3rds of the way. - Found the steering difficult coming down the hill on South Shawnigan Rd, as well as crossing. - Tried a bit of a run after, must commit to running after 1 of these rides each week.

Wednesday July 5th
Bike ~40 km to UVIC — bahh! never knew the hill to the south Shawnigan Rd. Junction would be so intense! I wanted to stay in my second cog, but couldn’t the whole way. This makes for a good goal to make. The ride down was solid.
